About the Course

This publication presents clinical guidelines to help substance abuse treatment counselors address issues that arise from their clients’ status in the criminal justice system and to aid personnel in the criminal justice system in understanding and addressing the challenges of working with offenders with substance use disorders. This course covers addresses substance abuse treatment planning. This course covers Chapter 4 only.

  1. Discuss the importance of and methods for assessing the severity of substance use and co-occurring disorders among adults in the criminal justice system.
  2. Explain how factors related to criminality and psychopathy affect substance abuse treatment.
  3. Describe factors related to client motivation and readiness to change and how to implement an effective treatment planning process.
