About the Course

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially psychologists, counselors, social workers, and nurses who provide services to or seek knowledge about all aspects of alcohol addiction. Whether unfamiliar or familiar with some of the concepts involved in this material, you can benefit from information in this course. The Betty Ford Center Book of Answers provides information about all aspects of alcohol addiction. Written in a question-answer format, the information is easy to absorb, despite being very rich in detail. The medical aspects of alcohol addiction are explained clearly and concisely, in a manner that even the non-expert can understand.

This course is based on the book, The Betty Ford Center Book of Answers: Help for Those Struggling With Substance Abuse – and for the People Who Love Them created by James W. West, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Course Material Author

James W. West, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. West is the vice chairman of the Betty Ford Center Board of Directors and was the medical director of the Betty Ford Center from 1983-1989. He is a graduate of the Loyola School of Medicine, practiced surgery for forty years. In addition, he started the Illinois State Medical Society Panel for the Impaired Physician, was an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center and taught at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Chicago. In March, 1993, the Betty Ford Center honored him with the naming of the James W. West M.D. Training Center.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. To become familiar with the physical and psychological symptoms of alcoholism
  2. To become expert in the range of health risks associated with alcohol addiction
  3. To learn to catch the early warning signs of alcohol addiction
  4. To understand the factors necessary for successful treatment of and recovery from alcoholism
