About the Course

You Just Don’t Understand: Women and Men in Conversation by Deborah Tannen Ph.D. was on the New York Times bestseller list for almost four year, eight months as number one. The author explains and demonstrates the differences in the way men and women communicate and approach relationships using examples from everyday life which anyone can relate to. The book provides wonderful insights which can be instrumental in improving troubled relationships and can benefit both professional counselors and the general public.

Deborah Tannen Ph.D.

Deborah Tannen, Ph.D. is a professor of linguistics at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and is the author of a number of books about gender differences in relationships and communication. She has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the National Science Foundation. She has also published articles in the New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe and. Her work has also been featured in numerous magazines and she has made several appearances on television.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Become familiar with gender differences in communication
  2. Understand the different ways men and women perceive and interpret conversations
  3. Understand the different needs and motives men and women have when forming relationships
  4. Realize that there is no one right way to communicate and learn to recognize the positive contributions each gender has to offer in different situations
