About the Course

This study is a randomized controlled trial that examines the effectiveness of Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) in reducing criminal recidivism risk among justice-involved adults receiving mental health residential treatment. The intervention aims to address criminogenic needs, specifically criminal thinking and criminal associations, through cognitive-behavioral strategies in a group setting. The study compared outcomes for participants receiving usual care versus usual care plus MRT over 6- and 12-month follow-ups, with primary outcomes focused on recidivism predictors. Findings indicated that MRT did not significantly outperform usual care in reducing criminal recidivism among the population studied, highlighting the challenges of engaging this group in intensive interventions.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, A Randomized Controlled Trial of Moral Reconation Therapy to Reduce Risk for Criminal Recidivism Among Justice-involved Adults in Mental Health Residential Treatment created by Dr. Daniel M. Blonigen et al in 2022.
