This study examines the retention rates among women in residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment based on their referral source—whether mandated by child protective services (CPS), the criminal justice system (CJ), or nonmandated. The study aims to determine the differences in treatment retention between these groups, while also assessing the impact of mental health disorders and stress levels on retention outcomes. It found that women mandated by CPS had significantly longer retention rates compared to nonmandated women, whereas stress and co-occurring mental health disorders were linked to lower retention across all groups.
