A Community Engaged Approach in Adapting Motivational Interviewing and Skills Training for Native Americans With Experiences of Substance Misuse

About the Course

The article discusses the process of culturally adapting Motivational Interviewing and Skills Training (MIST) for substance use treatment within a rural Native American community. The authors worked in collaboration with tribal leaders, elders, and community members to modify and implement MIST, ensuring that the intervention aligns with the community’s cultural values and practices. Key adaptations included incorporating tribal values and cultural imagery, using community-relevant examples, and creating a manual that emphasizes cultural sensitivity. The study evaluated the acceptability and feasibility of these adaptations and found that participants responded positively to the culturally tailored intervention. The authors suggest that future research should focus on evaluating the efficacy of these interventions in reducing substance use and related concerns in Native American communities.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, A Community Engaged Approach in Adapting Motivational Interviewing and Skills Training for Native Americans With Experiences of Substance Misuse created by Denise Walker, PhD, et al in 2023.
