Major Depression and other mood disorders are frequently encountered in clinical practice and mental health professionals often find clients presenting with these diagnoses challenging for several reasons. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) was first described and researched in the late 1970s and early 1980s and continues to be the gold standard for effective treatment of depression. CBT has been shown to be effective both in short-term symptom remission and in preventing relapse. Additional therapeutic approaches including Behavioral Activation (BA), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Rumination-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (RFCBT) have augmented the therapeutic arsenal. Standard CBT and these newer approaches will be described and demonstrated in this training. Strategies to address special issues such as suicidality, anhedonia, and relapse will also be discussed.
This course is based on the recorded webinar, Evidence-Based Treatment of Depression created by John Ludgate, PhD et al in 2024.
John Ludgate, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist, who has worked as a psychotherapist for more than 30 years and specializes in treating mood, anxiety, relationship, and psychosexual disorders. As well as having an active clinical practice, he is involved in training and supervision in CBT. Dr. Ludgate has written numerous journal articles and book chapters in the field of Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Anxiety and Depression, most recently contributing a chapter on Relapse Prevention to the Handbook of CBT (2021) published by the American Psychological Association. He has presented many seminars and workshops on cognitive behavioral approaches, both nationally and internationally.
