How to Prevent Alcohol and Illicit Drug Use Among Students in Affluent Areas

a qualitative study on motivation and attitudes towards prevention

About the Course

This study explores the motivations and attitudes towards substance use and prevention among high school students in affluent areas of Sweden. Utilizing qualitative interviews with 20 students aged 15–19, the research identifies key motives for substance use, including social conformity, coping with stress, and recreational purposes. Conversely, abstention was driven by academic ambitions, parental influence, and health concerns. The study highlights students’ skepticism about traditional prevention strategies, emphasizing the need for credible information, stricter substance control, parental involvement, and confidential, non-judgmental support systems. These findings provide a foundation for tailoring prevention efforts to this unique demographic.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, How to Prevent Alcohol and Illicit Drug Use Among Students in Affluent Areas created by Pia Kvillemo et al in 2021.
