This paper introduces a groundbreaking framework for understanding, addressing, and preventing community trauma, with a focus on the interplay between interpersonal violence, structural violence, and community resilience. It explores how community-level trauma manifests in the social-cultural, physical/built, and economic environments, highlighting its far-reaching impacts on public health and safety. The authors emphasize the need for community-based, culturally grounded strategies such as restorative justice and community building to promote resilience and prevent future trauma. This work serves as a resource for practitioners, policymakers, and community leaders to design holistic, multi-sectoral approaches to heal and strengthen communities.
This course is based on the reading-based online article, Adverse Community Experiences and Resilience created by Howard Pinderhughes, Ph.D. et al in 2015.
