About the Course

The article provides an in-depth analysis of the latest national data on substance use, mental health issues, and related treatment among the U.S. civilian population aged 12 or older. The report, produced by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), includes findings on tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug use, as well as mental health conditions and treatment access disparities. It highlights key trends in nicotine vaping, opioid misuse, and mental health conditions such as major depressive episodes and serious mental illness. The report also covers demographic patterns by age and race/ethnicity, substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health issues, and the implications of these findings for public health policy and clinical practice. Additionally, it emphasizes the need for targeted interventions and continued monitoring to address these evolving challenges.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Key Substance Use and Mental Health Indicators in the United States: Results from the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health created by SAMHSA: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in 2024.
