About the Course

This course examines the benefits of multi-service prevention programs for vulnerable pregnant or parenting women. It includes: Multi-service programs for women who are pregnant and/or parenting and use substances, Co-Creating Evidence Evaluation Project, Wrap-around services offered by the CCE programs: How services are delivered through the program’s staffing and via partnerships; Wrap-around services offered by the CCE programs: What is offered and how do clients engage with their program’s services and supports; Wrap-around services help ensure women access a wide range of needed primary care, as well as prenatal, postnatal and mental health care; Programs’ support in relation to women’s child welfare issues promotes collaboration, common understanding of expectations, and helps to prevent child/infant removals; and Cultural programming promotes women’s (re)connection to traditional knowledge and teachings, and to holistic and land-based healing practices.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Multi-service Prevention Programs for Pregnant and Parenting Women With Substance Use and Multiple Vulnerabilities: Program Structure and Clients’ Perspectives on Wraparound Programming created by Deborah Rutman et al in 2020.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Discuss strategies for effectively engaging women in multi-service programs designed for pregnant and parenting women with substance use issues.
  2. Identify the most effective services offered in multi-service programs and their impact on maternal and child health outcomes.
  3. Describe approaches to mitigate child welfare involvement and prevent child/infant removals among families receiving multi-service program support.
