The article examines strategies to promote user engagement with online substance-use interventions (SUIs). The review identifies five main engagement-promoting strategies (EPSs) used in online SUIs: tailoring, delivery strategies, incentives, reminders, and social support. The findings indicate that tailoring (individualizing content based on user characteristics), multimedia content, and reminders are effective techniques for promoting engagement, while evidence for social support was inconclusive and negative for incentives. The study highlights the need for further high-quality trials to explore engagement strategies comprehensively, considering the limited number of eligible studies and diversity in reporting outcomes.

Dr. Milward is an experienced behavioral science and insights researcher with 10 years working in the field, with a PhD in digital behavioral change interventions such as nudges with a track record of developing high quality products and exploratory and evaluative research. For 7 years, she worked at King’s College London, running RCTs and developing a research vision for moving creative tech into inclusive healthcare. She has published multiple works in peer reviewed journals.
Colin Drummond, MB ChB, MD, FRCP, FRCPsych, FFPH
Dr. Drummond is a Professor of Addiction Psychiatry and Consultant Psychiatrist at the National Addiction Centre, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London. His research focus includes alcohol screening and brief interventions. He has published more than 200 works in peer reviewed journals.
Allison Brown holds a BS degree in Criminal Justice with a Psychology focus and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who currently works at a Long-Term Insurance company bringing clinical experience to claim processes. Additionally, she developed and continues to lead the Continuing Education Program for Social Workers and Nurses and often leads complex process improvement projects Prior to this, her primary focus was in mental health and worked in both the outpatient and inpatient settings providing support to adults with mental illness.
