This course covers Parts I and II (Chapters 1 through 9) of Creative Interventions with Traumatized Children, Second Edition by Guilford Press. The book introduces a variety of trauma-informed therapeutic approaches and strategies that mental health practitioners can use to support children recovering from diverse traumatic events, such as parental loss, child abuse, family violence, bullying, and mass trauma. Expanded content in the second edition includes new information on the neurobiological basis of trauma responses and the effectiveness of creative therapeutic approaches. Topics such as mindfulness, resilience, post-traumatic growth, stress reduction, and dissociation are addressed alongside various therapeutic modalities, including play therapy, art therapy, music therapy, movement therapy, drama therapy, bibliotherapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Additionally, the book provides crisis intervention and prevention strategies and offers practical resources for clinicians.

Dr. Hollis obtained her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina. Her professional interests include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Positive Psychology; Trauma-Informed Practice; and Urban School Psychology.

Recognize and discuss the impact of trauma on children and adolescents.
Describe the neurobiology of trauma and the support for creative therapeutic interventions.
Identify the ethical principles of trauma-informed practice and discuss the need for cultural sensitivity in therapy.
Explain the evidence for and recommendations for the use of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy with traumatized children.
Compute and discuss additional approaches and strategies that are covered in Part II of this book, including art therapy, music therapy, play/sandtray therapy, movement therapy, and body maps.
