About the Course

This course examines a model that works across the lifespan for preventing high-risk substance use, the Lifestyle Risk Reduction Model. It includes: The Lifestyle Risk Reduction Model as an Exemplar of Lifespan Prevention, the six principles of the LRRM, the LRRM’s five conditions, Visual Depiction of the LRRM and Corresponding Principles, LRRM Characteristics Making It Applicable Across the Lifespan, Describing Problem Development and Avenues for Change, Addressing Risk Factors That Do and Do Not Change, Using Behavioral Guidelines for Reducing High‐Risk Use, Having Utility in Different Types of Prevention Programs, Prime For Life® (PFL) as an Example of Intervention Utilizing the LRRM, and Outcomes for This LRRM‐Based Program.

Rita E. Dykstra is an employee at the Prevention Research Institute™ (PRI), a private nonprofit organization that develops and sells preventive substance misuse interventions, including the Prime For Life® program described in the article. She is actively involved in research and program development related to preventing high-risk substance use across the lifespan​.

Blair Beadnell

Blair Beadnell is a board member and contributor at the Prevention Research Institute. She has also been involved in various studies focused on motivational interventions for alcohol and drug use, including those targeting impaired driving recidivism and other substance misuse contexts. Blair has published multiple works related to substance use prevention and intervention

She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
