Addiction and Autonomy:

Why emotional dysregulation in additional impairs autonomy and why it matters

About the Course

This article explores the relationship between addiction, emotional dysregulation, and autonomy. It challenges the prevailing view that addiction impairs autonomy only when addicts consume drugs against their will. Instead, it argues that emotional dysregulation in addiction undermines autonomous decision-making, even when addicts willingly use drugs. The article examines how emotional dysregulation affects self-control and autonomy, and discusses the implications for understanding addicts’ decision-making capacities, especially when they are prescribed their drug of choice. The discussion has significant philosophical and practical implications for drug treatment and policy.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, “Addiction and autonomy: Why emotional dysregulation in addiction impairs autonomy and why it matters” created by Edmund Henden, DPhil in 2023.
