"Letting Go and Staying Connected":

Substance Use Outcomes from a Developmentally Targeted Intervention for Parents of College Students

About the Course

This course examines the use of a handbook titled “First Years Away from Home: Letting Go and Staying Connected,” designed to increase parental interaction with students during their first semester of college to reduce substance use. The handbook, which is 14 pages long, was provided to parents before the start of the first semester and encourages three types of engagement: “cheerleader,” “coach,” and “safety monitor.” The course also covers the implementation and outcome measures, including prevalence and initiation of substance use, a handbook implementation check, and how different levels of parental interaction (active vs. passive participation) affect outcomes. Additionally, the course addresses “booster texts,” which are follow-up messages sent to reinforce the handbook’s guidance throughout the academic year.
