“A Fire in My Belly"

Conceptualizing U.S. Women’s Experiences of "Mom Rage"

About the Course

This study examines the maternal anger experiences of 65 U.S. mothers through qualitative interviews. It identifies five common frames for understanding ‘mom rage’: losing control, visualizing harm, expressing anger (physically and emotionally), reacting physiologically, and experiencing catharsis. The findings provide insight into the emotional complexities of motherhood and underscore the importance of destigmatizing maternal anger. The study also suggests directions for further research and highlights the need for supporting mothers in managing these challenging emotions.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, “A Fire in My Belly” created by Verhoff, China Billotte et al in 2023.
