About the Course

The article is a systematic review published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. The review evaluates the effectiveness of various interventions aimed at reducing the harm associated with continued tobacco use among individuals who are unable or unwilling to quit smoking. These interventions include the use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), varenicline, bupropion, electronic cigarettes, and other potential reduced-exposure products (PREPs). The review synthesizes findings from 24 trials, analyzing outcomes such as smoking reduction, cessation rates, and changes in biomarkers of tobacco exposure and health risks. While some evidence suggests that NRT can help reduce cigarette consumption and increase quit rates, the overall quality of evidence for other interventions remains low to very low, indicating a need for further high-quality research in this area. The authors conclude that while some harm reduction strategies may assist smokers in reducing cigarette intake, the evidence is insufficient to fully support their effectiveness in reducing long-term health risks.

Dr. Lindson works as a University Research Lecturer at the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford. She is the Managing Editor of the Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group. Nicola does research in the areas of smoking cessation and tobacco harm reduction and has had more than 100 works published in peer reviewed journals.

Dr. Hartman-Boyce is an associate professor at the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on evidence synthesis (both quantitative and qualitative) and the communication of complex information and data to inform policy and public action. She has more than 100 works published in peer reviewed journals.
