This article/course discusses a mixed-method research study which explored the experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) and structural violence in the lives of incarcerated women in New Mexico. IPV is a common feature in the lives of incarcerated women who will be returning to rural communities. This article/course will discuss the impacts and elevated risks associated with IPV, how IPV intersects with other challenges, and the results of the current research study. Additionally, the recommendations based on the current research will be addressed and discussed.
This course is based on the reading-based online article, Intimate Partner Violence and Structural Violence in the Lives of Incarcerated Women created by Shilo St. Cyr, MPH et al. in 2021.

Shilo St. Cyr, MPH
Shilo St. Cyr is the director of the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office, University of British Columbia. She has worked with victims/survivors for more than 20 years and has multiple works published in peer reviewed journals.
Elise Trott Jaramillo, PhD (Anthropology)
Dr Jaramillo is a cultural and applied anthropologist studying environmental and public health disparities for racially- and socioeconomically-marginalized populations. She has multiple works published in peer reviewed journals.
Allison Brown holds a BS degree in Criminal Justice with a Psychology focus and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who currently works at a Long-Term Insurance company bringing clinical experience to claim processes. Additionally, she developed and continues to lead the Continuing Education Program for Social Workers and Nurses and often leads complex process improvement projects Prior to this, her primary focus was in mental health and worked in both the outpatient and inpatient settings providing support to adults with mental illness.

Her work emphasizes participatory and community-driven strategies, critical pedagogy and knowledge-sharing, and the translation of research to policy.
