About the Course

This course is based on a systematic narrative review of the research concerning the topic of utilizing drama therapy with children and adolescents with psychosocial problems. In addition to providing a review of the effects, means, therapeutic attitude, and supposed mechanisms of change, this article/course also describes the related topics of overall psychosocial problems, internalizing and externalizing problems, social functioning, coping and regulation processes, social identity, and cognitive development. This article/course will provide mental health practitioners with an overview of the research literature regarding the use of drama therapy with children and adolescents who are displaying psychosocial problems, including the positive effects of drama therapy for this population.

Marij Berghs is affiliated with Royal Dutch Kentalis; KenVak, School of Arts Therapies, Zuyd University of Applied Science; and the Department of Clinical Psychology, Faculty of Psychology, Open University of the Netherlands. She has two works published in peer reviewed journals.

Anna-Eva J C Prick, PhD

Dr Anna-Eva Prick is Professor of Knowledge Development in Art Therapy at the Academy of Art Therapy at Zuyd University of Applied Sciences. The focus of her research group is on the elderly and people with intellectual disabilities. She has multiple articles published in peer reviewed journals.

Anna Hollis, Ph.D., NCSP, is a nationally certified school psychologist currently living near Detroit, Michigan. She is licensed as a psychologist in 2 states (Michigan and South Carolina) and certified as a school psychologist in in 5 states (South Carolina, Michigan, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Maryland). She is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA); the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP); the Michigan Association of School Psychologists (MASP); and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS). Dr. Hollis obtained her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina. Her professional interests include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Positive Psychology; Trauma-Informed Practice; and Urban School Psychology.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Define and describe psychosocial problems and discuss the prevalence of mental disorders in children and adolescents ages 5 to 17 years.
  2. Identify and explain the differences between internalizing and externalizing problems.
  3. Describe the potential difficulties experienced by children and adolescents with psychosocial problems, based on the research results.
  4. Define and discuss drama therapy, including theory, approaches, techniques, and uses.
  5. Describe and discuss the results of this systematic narrative review of the research regarding the use of drama therapy with children and adolescents with psychosocial problems.
