About the Course

This course examines the prevalence of SUD among the incarcerated population. It looks at those with substance related criminal involvement and those individuals with non-substance use related legal problems. It includes: measures of legal problems, AUD, and SUD; AUD diagnosis, SUD diagnosis, and DUD diagnosis; specific DUD’s; and gender differences.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, The Prevalence of Substance Use Disorders Among Community-based Adults With Legal Problems in the U.S. created by Kelly E. Moore, PhD et al. in 2021.

Kelly E. Moore, PhD

Kelly E. Moore is a professor at East Tennessee State University, Department of Psychology. Dr. Moore's research focuses on in improving the behavioral health of justice-involved populations as well as reducing crime and incarceration. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

Lindsay Oberleitner, PhD

Lindsay Oberleitner is a professor at Yale University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Oberleitner's primary research interests are the intersections of substance use disorders and chronic health conditions, primarily in offender populations. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
