This course is based on two articles that investigate the relationship between gambling disorder, mortality, suicidality, and concurrent disorders. Both studies collected data from Swedish national patient registries and monitored people who had gambling issues. The researchers found that individuals with gambling addictions had a considerably increased mortality risk, largely due to suicide, as well as a greater prevalence of concomitant illnesses such as substance use disorders, mental disorders, and physical health difficulties. These findings highlight the need of early detection and treatment of gambling addictions to avoid negative outcomes and improve overall health and well-being.
This course is based on the reading-based online articles, Suicide Attempt in Patients With Gambling Disorder – Associations With Comorbidity Including Substance Use Disorders created by Dr. Anders Håkansson and Dr. Anna Karlsson in 2020 and the reading-based online articles, Gambling disorder, increased mortality, suicidality, and associated comorbidity: A longitudinal nationwide register study created by Dr. Anders Håkansson and Dr. Anna Karlsson in 2018.
