This course examines the impact of adapted preventative interventions. It includes: Local Adaptation Typologies and Coding Systems, Ethnocultural Differences in Multiple Dimensions of Engagement, whether Cultural Adaptations Efforts Been Successful in Increasing Responsiveness, and Sustainability.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Directions for the Advancement of Culturally Adapted Preventive Interventions-Local Adaptations, Engagement, and Sustainability created by Manuel Barrera Jr., PhD et al. in 2017.

Manuel Barrera Jr.

Dr. Manuel Barrera Jr. was a professor of clinical psychology at ASU from August 1977 to May 2017. Before his passing in 2020, he focused on community psychology and social support networks. His works were published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

Cady Berkel, PhD

Dr. Berkel Berkel is an associate professor in the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University. Her research focuses on research focuses on reducing health disparities and she studies the implementation of evidence-based programs in community settings, including healthcare, school, and court systems. She has published multiple works in peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
