About the Course

This course examines Entertainment-education videos as a way to prevent substance use in adolescents in both rural and urban communities. It includes: E-E effects on healthy behaviors, E-E perspective on substance use prevention, and the perception of the Entertainment–Education video.

YoungJu Shin, PhD

Dr. Shin is a professor at Hugh Downs School of Human Communication, Arizona State University in Arizona. Her research intersects with four main areas: 1) substance use and other risky behavior prevention, 2) implementation quality and effect of prevention interventions, 3) media effect and narrative persuasion, and 4) immigrant health and communication. She has had her work published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

Michelle Miller-Day, PhD.

Dr. Day is a Professor of Communication Studies, Chapman University. Her research is at the intersection of interpersonal and family communication and health communication. She is particularly interested in the topics of mental health, submissive communication, and substance use prevention. She has more than 100 publications and is on numerous scholarly journal editorial boards in the fields of communication and health.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
