Prevention Strategies for American Indian Youth

About the Course

This course is compromised of two studies examining substance use in the American Indian youth population. It includes The Intertribal Talking Circle intervention and the adapted Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth 10-14. The latter study used the MOST approach and engaged the community in the creation of the preventative program on the reservation.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Formative Research and Cultural Tailoring of a Substance Abuse Prevention Program for American Indian Youth: Findings from the Intertribal Talking Circle Intervention created by Julie A. Baldwin, Ph.D. et al in 2021 and the reading-based online article, Nancy Rumbaugh Whitesell, Ph.D. et al. Julie A. Baldwin, Ph.D.

Dr. Baldwin is the Regents’ Professor and Director of the Center for Health Equity Research at Northern Arizona University. She is a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, and has made a life-long commitment to serving diverse communities and to advocating for health promotion programs for children, adolescents and families. Dr. Baldwin has had a consistent program of applied research addressing HIV/AIDS and substance abuse prevention in youth, with a special emphasis on working with American Indian adolescents and their families. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

Nancy Rumbaugh Whitesell, Ph.D.

Dr. Whitesell is a professor at Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Health, at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Whitesell’s work focuses on child and adolescent development within the contexts of American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) communities. Her research projects apply developmental science to inform preventive interventions to improve outcomes for both young children (birth to five years) and young adolescents (10 to 14 years). She has had multiple works published in peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

  1. Discuss the disparity in American Indian substance misuse, and research.
  2. Identify measures for a substance use prevention program targeted at American Indian youth.
  3. Describe the culturally tailored American Indian programs and how they are adapted and made accessible.
