This course will examine the need for comprehensive mental health services in the school setting. Mental health concerns have risen among youth, and the factors involved with this increase will be examined. The current study being discussed in this article/course describes and discusses the core clinical competencies which are needed to implement the key features of a comprehensive school-based mental health system. The training standards and professional competencies of four school-based mental health professionals (school psychologists, school social workers, school counselors, and school nurses) will be discussed. Additionally, allocation of these professionals’ time is reviewed based on a systematic review of the literature. Recommendations for implementing an integrated model of school mental health (SMH) services are described.

Faith Zabek, Ph.D., NCSP is a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development. Dr. Zabek earned a Ph.D. in School Psychology from Georgia State University. She is also a Nationally Certified School Psychologist.
Michael D. Lyons, Ph.D., NCSP
Michael D. Lyons, Ph.D., NCSP is an Associate Professor and Clinical and School Psychology Program Director at the University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development. Dr. Lyons earned his Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina. He is also a Nationally Certified School Psychologist.
Anna Hollis, Ph.D., NCSP, is a nationally certified school psychologist currently living near Detroit, Michigan. She is licensed as a psychologist in 2 states (Michigan and South Carolina) and certified as a school psychologist in in 5 states (South Carolina, Michigan, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Maryland). She is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA); the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP); the Michigan Association of School Psychologists (MASP); and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS). Dr. Hollis obtained her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina. Her professional interests include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Positive Psychology; Trauma-Informed Practice; and Urban School Psychology.
