This conceptual article addresses “best practices” for Indigenous Peoples in the United States and Canada. The authors identify four potential approaches and discusses the pragmatic and ethical challenges of these approaches. Areas for future research are also suggested.

Dennis C. Wendt, PhD
Dr. Wendt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Education and Counseling Psychology at McGill University and Director of the Cultural and Indigenous Research on Counseling Psychology (CIRC) lab. He has spent more than a decade working with Indigenous communities developing and evaluating culturally relevant interventions in both mental health and substance use. He has published multiple works in peer reviewed journals.
Kelsey Huson
Kelsey Huson is a doctoral student in Counselling Psychology at McGill University. Her clinical practice is guided by a person-centered approach to best support clients through their growth process. She has had multiple works published in peer reviewed journals.
David Lutkemeier holds a BA degree in psychology, a master’s degree in developmental psychology, and a doctorate degree from the University of Cincinnati in Special Education and Psychology. He is certified as a psychologist by the Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners, as well as holding public school superintendent certification in Arizona and California. Dr. Lutkemeier has worked as an assistant professor at Arizona State University, a school psychologist, special education director, assistant superintendent, and superintendent in both Arizona and California. David, working as a consultant with a national curriculum management group (CMSi) has completed over two dozen comprehensive district-wide curriculum audits in 15 states over the past 20 years and has worked as a test developer for CE Learning Systems for the past ten years.
