About the Course

The study comprising this course’s material is an article investigating the documented over-representation of autism in transgender populations and high rate of gender variance in autistic populations, and most importantly the impact of this overlap on individual mental health. The study therefore sought to investigate whether the autism/transgender overlap confers an increased risk of depression or anxiety.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Autism and Transgender Identity: Implications for Depression and Anxiety created by Jennifer Murphy, PhD,et al. in 2019.

Jennifer Murphy, PhD

Dr. Murphy is a lecturer in Psychology at Royal Holloway University of London. She is particularly interested in individual differences in interoception and how these differences link to mental and physical health. She has published four works in peer reviewed journals.

Freya Prentice, PhD Candidate

Freya has worked as a research assistant focusing on sex and gender differences in interoception, and the implications for emotional ability and mental health.

Reubs Walsh, PhD Candidate

Reubs had been a lecturer and teaching associate at multiple Universities. Walsh’s PhD research examines the role of the social environment and social-cognitive development in mental health risk, mostly in a community sample of adolescents, but also in autistic and trans populations. She has had 6 works published in peer reviewed journals.

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, LP

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Identify at least three pieces of research in support of overlap between autistic spectrum disorder and gender variance
  2. Identify and describe some elements of the relationship between transgender individuals with autism spectrum disorder and depression/anxiety
  3. Describe at least three steps mentioned by the authors to improve treatment of transgender individuals with autism spectrum disorder
