About the Course

This course examines loot box games as it pertains to problematic gaming, gambling, and addiction, as well as the role that advertising plays. It includes: mobile gaming, gaming disorder, attitudes and behavior of players, loot-box gaming and gambling, advertising in mobile games, game involvement, spending habits, attitude towards the game, attitude towards advertising, time spent playing the gaming, and watching ads for currency.

Samuel M. Tham, PhD

Dr. Tham is an assistant professor in the Department of Journalism and Media Communication at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO. His research focuses on advertising and problematic gaming and his work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

Dr. Gregory P. Perreault is a multimedia journalism professor at Appalachian State University. He's a media sociologist who researches phenomena associated with journalism and gaming. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
