This courses discusses the role of behavioral couples treatment where one or more parents in the home have a substance use disorder (SUD) in reducing the risk of child abuse. It includes: a literature review, risk for child abuse among mothers and fathers with SUD, behavioral couples treatment for SUD, the role of relationship satisfaction, the role of number of days abstinent, secondary effects of parent treatment for substance abuse on children in their homes, and detailed methodology.

Dr. Kelly is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Old Dominion University. Her research interests include Parental Substance Abuse & Child Development, Military Families/Military Children, Fathering, Family Violence, Statistics, and Research Design. Dr. Kelly has published more than 50 articles in peer reviewed journals.
Adrian J. Bravo, PhD
Dr. Bravo is an assistant professor at William and Mary College. Professor Bravo’s research focuses on examining protective/risk factors (e.g., substance use motives, substance use protective behavioral strategies, impulsivity-like traits, rumination, and mindfulness) of substance use and mental health across distinct populations (i.e., college students, clinical populations, and military personnel). He has had more than 50 articles published in peer reviewed journals.
Abby L. Braitman, PhD
Dr. Braitman is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Old Dominion University. She teaches and mentor students in the Health Psychology (Ph.D.), Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology (Ph.D.), and Experimental Psychology (M.S.) graduate programs. Her research interests focus on risky health behaviors among emerging adults, particularly heavy episodic alcohol use among emerging adults and is interested in identifying technology-based techniques easily adoptable at institutions for mass implementation. She has published multiple articles in peer reviewed journals.
L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
