About the Course

The goal of this course is to review the literature on treatment for suicidal ideation, self-harm, and suicide attempts among youth, distill the research into recommendations for practice, and provide examples of how practitioners can use these practices in their programs. Examples will include programs that can be implemented in schools, residential treatment programs and criminal justice settings.

This course is based on the article, Treatment for Suicidal Ideation, Self-Harm, and Suicide Attempts Among Youth created by SAMHSA in 2020.

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, LP

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. To identify several factors that emphasize the need for more treatment programs for youth struggling with suicidal/self-harming behavior
  2. To describe several qualities of treatment programs with demonstrated effectiveness with youth with suicidal/self-harming behavior
  3. To identify at least four types of evaluations helpful in assessing the effectiveness of treatment with youth with suicidal/self-harming behavior
