About the Course

The current study is an overview of systematic reviews concerning evaluation of any preventative or therapeutic intervention on suicidal ideation or self-harming behaviors in children/adolescents. Several preventative or therapeutic interventions are compared with one another for their effectiveness.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, The Effects of Interventions Preventing Self-harm and Suicide in Children and Adolescents: An Overview of Systemic Reviews created by Ida Sund Morken et al in 2020.

Ida Sund Morken

Ida Sund Morken is a PhD student in the Department of Psychology at Norwegian University of Science and Technology. In the last three years, she ahs published 15 articles in peer reviewed journals.

Astrid Dahlgren

Dr. Dahlgren is a senior researcher and editor, Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Eastern and Southern Norway (RBUP), Oslo, Norway. She is primarily responsible for the development and evaluation of the CLAIM measurement tool as part of the Informed Health Choices project and she has published more than 50 articles in peer reviewed journals.

Course Creator

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, LP

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Compare costs/benefits of several preventative and intervention strategies for children/adolescents with suicidal ideation and self-harming behaviors
  2. Identify which preventative and intervention strategies have the most quantitative evidence to support their use with children, adolescents, and the systems that work with children/adolescents
  3. Name at least three implications for the use of research provided by studies on preventative and intervention strategies for children/adolescents with suicidal ideation and self-harming behavior
