Research has shown that individuals in underserved cultural groups can have some reluctance to engage in treatment or can prematurely end treatment based on communication issues between the individual and a medical/psychological provider. This is a systematic review of literature exploring types of communication affecting engagement in mental health settings among minorities. The authors offer recommendations for how clinicians may improve communication with clients from underserved populations to for how clinicians may help prevent these clients from disengaging from behavioral health services.

Neil Krishan Aggarwal is an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University and a research psychiatrist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. His areas of research interest are cultural psychiatry, cultural-competence training, and psychiatric anthropology. He has published multiple books and articles.
Matthew C. Pieh, M.D.
Matthew C. Pieh is a psychiatrist in New York and an assistant professor. He has had two papers published in peer reviewed journals.
Lisa Dixon, M.D., M.P.H.
Lisa Dixon is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Columbia University Medical Center, where she directs the Division of Behavioral Health Services and Policy Research and the Center for Practice Innovations, which goes by CPI, at the New York State Psychiatric Institute.
Sandi Cardaman has been a Licensed Mental Health Counselor for more than 15 years. She has worked with eating disorders, domestic violence and clients who are working with the dependency system.
