The Effectiveness and Cost of Clinical Supervision for Motivational Interviewing: A Randomized Controlled Trial

About the Course

Although clinical supervision is important for clinical education and clinical implementation in services, little empirical attention has been given to the effectiveness of supervision on improvement of client outcomes. This is a quantitative study comparing two types of supervision for clinicians using motivational interviewing strategies. The discussion of the results of this study include recommendations for improving supervision quality and the rising cost of supervision for the organization.

Steve Martino, PhD
Dr. Martino is a professor of psychiatry and Yale University School of Medicine and Chief of Psychology at the VA CT Healthcare System. He specializes in the treatment of addictive disorders and of patients diagnosed with co-occurring psychiatric problems, with specific interests in motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, group work, use of brief interventions in medical settings, and clinical supervision.
Manuel Paris Jr. , PsyD
Dr. Paris, Jr is an associate professor of psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine, The Hispanic Clinic. His professional focus is on the adaptation of evidence-based interventions within a culturally appropriate framework, with a specific emphasis on motivational interviewing for co-occurring disorders.
Luiz Añez, PsyD
Dr. Añez is an associate professor of psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine. He has done extensive research on the use of cognitive behavioral therapy and Motivational Interviewing in the treatment of monolingual Hispanic clients.

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.

  3. To identify strategies for improving the quality of treatment outcomes via changes in supervision of clinicians
