The course uses community-based participatory research for a culturally centered American Indian family prevention program. The intervention uses a positive youth development model for indigenous peoples. The program was based on community-engaged research that showed promise with from a Navajo and Pueblo version of the Family Listening Program centered on improving behavioral and health outcomes through the use of prevention.

Lorenda Belone, PhD.
Dr. Belone (Dine/Navajo) is Assistant Professor, within the Health Education Program, UNM College of Education with a secondary appointment within the UNM Center for Participatory Research. She has been actively engaged over the past 14 years in CBPR research that have involved southwest Native American communities. Her most recent experience is as PI of the Mescalero Apache Family Listening Program, an National Institutes for Health funded research project adapting an intergenerational family prevention program which integrates an empirically-tested evidence-supported intervention with culturally supported interventions in Mescalero Apache.
L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Identify the risk factors for substance and alcohol use/misuse.
Summarize the protective factors for SUD, as well as cultural competent approaches for this population.
