About the Course

This course is a review of existing literature in the treating of co-occurring SUD and psychiatric disorders in the use of Technology Based Interventions (TBI). Studies mostly examined SUD with depression and anxiety. There was a study of PTSD and SUD in Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. TBI’s examined were SHADE, VetChange, DBT Coach, iTreAD, DEAL, Coming Home and Moving Forward.

This course is based on the article, Technology-based Interventions for Substance Use and Comorbid Disorders-An Examination of the Emerging Literature created by Dawn E. Sugarman, PhD et al. in 2017.

Dawn E. Sugarman, PhD
Dawn Sugarman, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and an assistant psychologist at McLean Hospital in the Division of Alcohol, Drugs, and Addiction. Dr. Sugarman’s research primarily focuses on the use of technology in increasing access to evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders, with an emphasis on special populations such as women and individuals with substance use and co-occurring other psychiatric disorders.
Aimee N.C. Campbell, PhD
Dr. Aimee Campbell is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatric Social Work at Columbia University. Her research focuses on the development and testing of individual and program level interventions for substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health disorders, and HIV prevention and treatment, including the leveraging of technology-based platforms.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge. The content is at an intermediate level.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Acknowledge that technology based intervention is a viable way to treat patients.
  2. Identify for which disorders TBI shows the strongest support.
  3. Summarize considerations to keep patients safe while using TBI.
