This is a research intensive course examines a randomized control trial in which group therapy versus standard behavioral couples therapy plus individually based treatment for patients with alcoholism. Treatment outcomes were discussed, as well as reasons for those outcomes, as well as shortcoming and the application to practice.

Timothy J. O’Farrell, Ph.D.

Timothy J. O'Farrell, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He also is Associate Chief of the Psychology Service at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Brockton and West Roxbury, Massachusetts, where he directs the Counseling for Alcoholics' Marriages (CALM) Project and the Alcohol and Family Studies Laboratory.

Jeremiah A. Schumm, Ph.D., ABPP

Dr. Schumm is Board-Certified in Clinical Psychology. He is a national master trainer in behavioral couple therapy for substance use disorders as well as a master trainer for cognitive-behavioral conjoint therapy for PTSD. In addition to having conducted over 50 national and international research presentations and clinical training workshops, he has published 47 peer-reviewed journal articles and 12 book chapters in the areas of substance misuse and PTSD. He serves on multiple scientific journal editorial boards, including Consulting Editor for the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

Laura J. Dunlap, PhD.

Laura Dunlap, PhD, is experienced in data collection and econometric analysis; evaluations of substance abuse and health services interventions, including process, outcome, and cost estimation, cost-effectiveness analysis, and cost-benefit analysis; and public policy analysis. Dr. Dunlap has published her findings in many peer-reviewed journals, including Health Services Research, Health Economics, Contemporary Economic Policy, Applied Economics, the Journal of Public Health Policy, the Journal of Addictive Diseases, Justice Research and Policy, the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, and the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
