This article reports the findings of an Australian population-based cross-sectional investigation of bereavement experiences. The palliative community recommends the development of a compassionate community approach. The aim of this article is to determine who provides bereavement support in the community, what sources are perceived to be the most or least helpful and for what reason, and to identify the empirical elements for optimal support. Samar M Aoun, PhD.
Dr. Aoun is a Professor of Palliative Care at La Trobe University. She has published more than 100 articles in peer reviewed journals and many of those articles cover end of life issues and bereavement.
Lauren J. Breen, PhD.
Dr. Breen is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Edith Cowan University and an Associate professor at Curtin University. She has published multiple articles in peer reviewed journals. Dr. Breen developed workshops for emergency services personnel on grief, trauma, and self-care and is an Associate Editor of Death Studies, a Fellow in Thanatology: Death, Dying and Bereavement, and a member of the International Work Group on Death, Dying and Bereavement.

Barbara McMillan, BA, MS, EdD, LPC has 35 years of experience as a therapist, clinical director, and administrator in mental health and substance abuse programs. She holds degrees in psychology and education, and has been a licensed professional counselor and supervising counselor for many years. After 18 years in various roles in private and public mental health settings, she became a full-time college psychology and sociology instructor.
