Treating Addiction and Psychiatric Disorders

About the Course

This course features two separate articles that discuss treating co-occurring substance use disorders (SUD) and psychiatric disorders. The first article deals with clients in psychotherapy and includes vignettes. It highlights the original version of motivational interviewing (MI) and recommends using MI and psychodynamic therapy with SUD. The second article deals with the assessment and treatment of co-occurring mood disorders with SUD, mostly highlighting Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder. It covers the difficulty in accurate diagnosis, and as a result conflicting research. It is research concentrated.

This course is based on the article, Addiction Disorder Considerations for Patients Seeking Psychotherapy created by Kimberly Stubbs, MD, et al. in 2019 and article Assessment and treatment of mood disorders in the context of substance abuse created by Bryan K. Tolliver, MD, PhD et al. in 2015.
