Alexander L. Chapman, PhD, Rpsych, is a Professor and Clinical Science Area Coordinator in the Department of Psychology at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. He is also the president of the DBT Centre of Vancouver and a DBT Trainer and Consultant with Behavioral Tech. He is the author of numerous scientific publications, presents widely at scientific conferences, and is on the editorial boards of Personality Disorder: Theory, Research, and Treatment, Journal of Personality Disorders, and Behavior Therapy.

Elizabeth Mosco, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in Reno, NV. She opened a private practice after 10 years of conducting home-based assessment and therapy with the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System. Dr. Mosco’s clinical interests include maternal mental health, older adults, and third wave cognitive behavioral therapies.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  2. Describe the three reasons for using phone coaching.
  3. Summarize the pros and cons of using electronic communication in coaching.
  4. Formulate how to structure a DBT coaching call, and list the phone coaching treatment hierarchy.
  5. List several core skills coaching strategies and describe the two major sets of skills utilized during DBT coaching calls.
  6. Distinguish how suicide crisis calls may differ from other coaching calls.
  7. Summarize how clinicians can observe their limits in DBT phone coaching.
