In family therapy, the family as a whole is the focus of treatment. However, implementing culturally competent family therapy requires clinicians to have an understanding of different populations’ unique backgrounds and characteristics. This course reviews the characteristics of several diverse populations and how to best match a family therapy intervention to each population.
This course is based on Chapter 5 of (TIP 39) Substance Abuse Treatment And Family Therapy created by SAMHSA in 2015.

Dr. Ilana Breslau is a licensed clinical psychologist with a private practice in New York City, where she specializes in treating addictions, trauma, and mood and anxiety disorders. In addition to her private practice, Dr. Breslau is a supervising psychologist and Director of Continuing Education at North Central Bronx Hospital, and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

After taking this course, you should be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the unique characteristics of populations distinguished by: gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and co-occurring-disorders
Describe the family therapy communication and counseling styles most effective for different populations
Select the most effective family therapy practice for clients who possess multiple identities and membership in multiple groups
