Responsible and Controlled Use-Older Cannabis Users and Harm Reduction

About the Course

This course examines the responsible and controlled marijuana use in older drug users and how they reduce risk through harm reduction. It includes: health risks, moderation, respiratory issues, overdose management, using the wrong strain, mental health, dependence and withdrawal, legal risks, arrest, safe access, special risks, stigmatization, identity management, personal relationships, social etiquette, and energy drain.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Responsible and Controlled Use-Older Cannabis Users and Harm Reduction created by Nicholas Lau et al in 2015.

Sheigla Averill, a Research Analyst at the Institute for Scientific Analysis, has worked on NIDA/NIH‐funded projects on pregnancy and violence, needle exchange, drug users’ engagement in health and social services, young heroin users, nonmedical prescription drug use and baby boomers’ marijuana use

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
