This course reviews a book by a leading addiction specialist, Oscar G. Bukstein, Treating Adolescents with Substance Use Disorders. This informative and practical book explores what works in treating adolescents. The author describes best practices for treating adolescents with substance use disorders, including providing techniques to enhance motivation for change, to teach a variety of recovery skills, and to implement parent management training and parent/adolescent problem-solving. This course addresses recommended strategies to foster a prosocial peer network and to address mental health problems that can co-occur with substance use disorders (SUDs). Specific clinical strategies are recommended for clinicians to use to provide a comprehensive and integrated approach to treating adolescents with substance sue disorders. Additionally, clinicians can pick and choose strategies from this book to meet the needs of individual clients to complement their own approaches.

Oscar G. Bukstein, MD, MPH, is Vice-Chair of Psychiatry at Boston Children’s Hospital and Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Previously, he was Professor of Psychiatry and Chief of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Medical Director of DePelchin Children’s Center. Dr. Bukstein spent 28 years at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he achieved the rank of Professor of Psychiatry. Since the 1980s, his clinical practice and research have focused on treatment of youth with substance use disorders and other disruptive behavior disorders. He has authored or coauthored over 150 papers, chapters, or books. Dr. Bukstein is co-chair of the Committee on Quality Issues of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, which develops clinical practice guidelines for professionals treating children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders.

She is licensed as a psychologist in 2 states (Michigan and South Carolina) and certified as a school psychologist in in 5 states (South Carolina, Michigan, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Maryland). She is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA); the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP); the Michigan Association of School Psychologists (MASP); and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS). Dr. Hollis obtained her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina. Her professional interests include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Positive Psychology; Trauma-Informed Practice; and Urban School Psychology.
