This article discusses the tremendous biomedical advancements in HIV prevention and treatment that have led to efforts to end the HIV epidemic. It goes on to recognize that the significant mental health and substance use problems among people living with HIV (PLWH) and people vulnerable to acquiring HIV are a barrier to this goal. Integration of mental health screening and care into all HIV testing and treatment settings is discussed as a way to strengthen HIV prevention and care outcomes.

Robert H. Remiena, PhD
Robert H. Remien, PhD, is Director of the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies and Professor of Clinical Medical Psychology (in Psychiatry) at Columbia University. As a researcher in the HIV Center from its beginnings, he has published numerous articles on psychopathology and psychological resilience, psychoimmunology, coping and adaptation to chronic illness among individuals, couples, and families, sexual and health behaviors, long-term survival with HIV/AIDS, adherence to HIV care and treatment, and acute HIV-infection. He has had over 100 articles published in peer reviewed journals.
Michael J. Stirratt, PhD
Michael J. Stirratt, Ph.D. is a Scientific Program Officer at the NIMH Division of AIDS Research. Dr. Stirratt has worked for 20 years in HIV behavioral research with a focus on antiretroviral medication adherence and sexual risk reduction among people living with HIV and his work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Nadia Nguyen, PhD
Dr. Nguyen is a Postdoctoral Fellow, HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies. Dr. Nguyen’s research focuses structural and contextual risk factors for HIV acquisition and poor HIV health outcomes among youth during the transition from adolescence to young adulthood. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
