Toxicology of Secondhand Smoke (Chapter 2): The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke: A Report of the Surgeon General reviews the evidence relevant to coherence and includes the mechanisms relevant to the pathogenesis of diseases caused by secondhand smoke. This chapter also sets out a foundation for interpreting the observational evidence that is the focus of most of the following chapters. The discussion that follows details the mechanisms that enable smoke components to injure the respiratory tract and cardiovascular system and to cause nonmalignant and malignant diseases and other adverse effects.
