Creating the Context (TIP 56, Chapter 1): Addressing the Specific Behavioral Health Needs of Men explains some of the research on masculinity, and the first chapter defines other key concepts, such as gender, sex, and substance use disorders. It also presents some basic information on men’s substance use and abuse in relation to that of women. Finally, it discusses the current state of the behavioral health field in regards to male-specific substance abuse treatment, and what the future may hold for male-informed treatment.

Course Objectives:
After taking this course, you should be able to:
Acknowledge reasons why men are at greater risk for substance abuse.
Examine the history and theories of male socialization, changes in perceptions of masculinity and male roles, fatherhood, and other factors related to men's substance use, abuse, and treatment.
Define sex and gender as well as substance abuse and substance dependence.
Conceptualize the frameworks of masculinity, male roles, gender role conflict, masculine role stress, and men's substance abuse.
