About the Course:

This course provides an overview of changes from the DSM-IV-TR manual to the newly released DSM-5. The course provides summary knowledge for practitioners transitioning from use of the previous manual to the new diagnostic criteria and coding system of the DSM-5.

This course is based on the reading-based online, DSM-5 Overview of Changes created by American Psychiatric Association in 2013.

Dr. Gibson is a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years in research, clinical and consulting practice. He has also held leadership roles in research administration and program evaluation and more recently has specialized in program evaluation and system analysis. He draws upon his years of expertise as a practicing psychologist, administrator, researcher and technologist to help universities evaluate their programs to implement, meet, and maintain CACREP standards.

This course is appropriate for psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals working in fields that utilize the DSM-5 as a component of the treatment process. It is also appropriate from other professionals for increasing knowledge of changes to this standard text of mental health practice.

Course Objectives:

  1. Identify significant diagnostic changes from the DSM-IV-TR to the newly published DSM-5.

  2. Demonstrate the changes to diagnostic terminology in the DSM-5.

  3. Distinguish the concept changes in diagnosing between the DSM-IV-TR and DSM-5.

  4. Cite examples of specific clarifications made to the practice applicabilty beginning with the DSM-5.
