About the Course

This course consists of two chapters from A Provider’s Introduction to Substance Abuse Treatment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Individuals.

Clinical Issues With Bisexuals (Chapter 9) presents information to help providers who treat bisexual clients. The information includes some of the misconceptions about bisexuals that might interfere with their treatment, some of the psychosocial issues that may arise when treating bisexuals for substance abuse, and some counseling strategies effective in treating bisexual women and men.

Clinical Issues With Transgender Individuals (Chapter 10) presents a brief introduction to issues facing transgender clients and the substance abuse treatment providers caring for them. The chapter provides an explanation of the term transgender, a brief overview of the theoretical models that describe transgender identity development, and the clinical issues specific to transgender clients.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Acknowledge the myths and misconceptions about bisexuals that might interfere with treatment.
  2. Define the word transgender, gender identity, sexual orientation, intersexed, transsexuals, transvestites, drag queens, and bigendered.
  3. Describe the different theoretical models used to clarify the development of gender identity in transgender men and women.
