About the Course

This hour-long video presentation, from SAMHSA’s Recovery Month webcast series, explores the role of faith and faith-based organizations in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. It discusses pastoral counseling, interventions, and other recovery services offered by faith-based organizations as well as the need for pastoral training.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, and social workers who seek knowledge about the role of faith-based organizations in the addiction treatment process. It is appropriate for all levels of participants' knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Explain the role of faith in addressing addiction, the manner in which pastors often deal with the issue, and training needed.
  2. Identify components of successful faith-based addiction programs and discuss the advantages a member of the clergy may have in addressing an addiction problem.
  3. Discuss the faith of substance abusers and the qualities of those in the congregation who may be of most help in addressing addiction issues.
