About the Course

Code of Ethics for Alcohol and Drug Counselors was published for drug and alcohol counselors in the state of Iowa. This Code of Ethics was adopted to aid in the delivery of the highest quality of professional care to persons seeking chemical dependency services. It covers the nine specific principles which are inclusive of: Responsibility to clients, dual relationships, confidentiality, professional competence and integrity, responsibility to students, employees and supervisees, responsibility to the profession, finacial arrangements, advertising, and legal and moral standards.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Explain a counselor's responsibility to clients, obligations regarding dual relationships, and considerations regarding confidentiality.
  2. Describe the standards for professional competence and integrity as well as the counselor's responsibility to students, employees and supervisors, and to the profession.
  3. Discuss ethical considerations regarding financial arrangements, principles related to advertising, and the legal and moral standards for alcohol and drug counselors.
